For those wondering about Pastor Dave Choi's (Allentown Retreat speaker '06) whereabouts, check his post on his experience during NBA all star weekend. Pretty crazy stuff.

Also, it seems like the Skit Guys are finally getting it and showing signs of change. Check out Soong-Chan's latest posts concerning his dialog with them and Zondervan. It's definitely encouraging especially in light of the recent Rickshaw Rally controversy.

Soong-Chan Rah got a response from Youth Specialties which seems to be positive. But the Skit Guys response was pretty pathetic. You can check out the details here.

Soong-Chan Rah points out a youth ministry skit resource called "Skits that Teach" by two white guys published by Zondervan that has a skit featuring a Chinese deliveryman with his dialogue written in broken english. Here's a sampling:

"Herro, Dis is Wok's Up Restaurant calling to confirm your order. . . . I think that, yes, you total is 14 dollar 95 cent."

"Herro? This is Wok's Up Restaurant again. We have drive and drive, and we can't find you house. We don't find you house soon, you pu pu get cold. Pu pu good when it hot."

(Hostile) "Okay, we drive for long time looking for you house. I tell you, you go outside and I look for you. I am driving a red Rincon (Lincoln) Continental. You pu pu still getting cold. Bye!

"Okay, I drive for long time and I stil not find you house. So I am eating you pu pu! Ruckiry it still warm. I was hungry, so I eat it. Mmmmm . . . this pu pu is good. (Smacks lips a few times) You on my bad rist. You don't call us anymore. Bye!

Here's a resource entitled "Skits that Teach". What exactly are they teaching? The thought of white kids in youth groups all around the country using this "resource" to perpetuate Asian stereotypes in order to get a cheap laugh at our expense is sickening and demeaning. Did they ever consider how an Asian person would feel if they were in the audience? Or do they just assume that there wouldn't be any in their midst? What an offense to the gospel! How could Zondervan, a reputable Christian publisher, go along with this? Get the word out.

Thanks

What an eventful week!

Highlights

  • TUES: Some of our college folks came back and cooked us a great dinner (mapa tofu; tomato and egg; beef and brocolli). J had 6 bowls of rice.  Thanks TK, TC, JC, and KL for a good time.
  • WED: PK came over for Korean BBQ (Kalbi; panchan; some kind of seafood jigae). Told us how he deep fried 18 turkeys for his church last week.
  • THURS: went to church for worship and sharing; had a light lunch; went to Starbucks right before closing [whew!]; headed to my uncle and aunt’s house for thanksgiving dinner with my parents, Andy’s family, and Jessica; tried deep fried turkey for the first time; need to go for the turducken next year.
  • FRI: Andy, Kelly, and Ethan came over along with my parents. Attempted to play basketball; had hotpot for the first time as a family since the days we were back in NJ.
  • SAT: we did some rake leafing; uh, I mean leaf raking at church; went to TC’s place to watch Tech smote the Wahoos. Since J is teaching Matthew how to say Wahoo, we’re teaching him a word to go along with it: “stinks”.

In the end, I’m thankful for family, food, and football.
